Installing Magmic’s Texas Hold’em King is very easy, they offer an OTA install from their Blackberry browser. All their games have a free 3-day trial options which is great because there’s not many other vendors doing this, it goes to show that Magmic is very confident in their games.
Starting the game you would have the option to pick either World Series or Freestyle game play. World Series is knock-off tournament play. You play against the AI and try to knock each one off until you cleared everyone’s money at the table. After each table cleared you will start at a different table with bigger blinds. You do this until you win the tournament and become the champion. After each level the game did seem to get harder, I am not too sure if it was just coincidence or they made the AI harder the further you go.
Freestyle you play until you lost all your money or you are tired of the game. Blinds remain constant and when you knock someone off another AI will come in with $500. Freestyle play is very enjoyable until you accumulate a big pot. With a big pot you can easily muscle the opponents coming in with only $500 and it is nearly impossible to lose your money. This forces you to play reckless but by playing reckless you always seem to come out the winner and not the loser. If Magmic raised the blinds and computer’s initial pot total progressively, it would make the game much more enjoyable and provide more hours of play.
Magmic has not developed a real-time human-to-human play just yet, so the extent of multiplayer is posting your high score and participating in monthly tournaments. The top 3 finishers in a monthly tournament win a prize from Magmic, usually one or more free games. The issue with tournament play is it seems that the people that play the most win and not the people with the most skill.
The AI is not the greatest but I played on other platforms from computer, web, and mobiles and none even come close to human play. You can not expect much in regards to AI especially when it comes to the limiting process power of a Blackberry. Even considering this fact, I would still highly recommend buying the game for only $7 or at least downloading the trial. It is a great way to pass the time in between meetings or on the subway home.
