BBToday Overview

BBToday
Pocket PC users familiar with the Today Screen program would instantly recognize BBToday. BBToday is a program that overrides your home screen and displays some of the more important information. Currently BBToday can list your 5-day forecast, new and total emails, tasks, appointments, plus battery and signal strength all on one screen. The best thing is that the program is completely open source and free.

The program does override your home screen so you will need to press the ESC button to exit to your regular home screen. The BBToday screen is not as pretty as your normal home screen but provides a lot more functionality. It would be nice if there was an option to not have the program over ride the original home screen.

There is a thread on the AT&T BlackBerry support site (http://forums.cingular.com/attws/board/message?board.id=rim&message.id=4321) about apps like these and how they may or may not add additional charges to your bill. No one from ATT has responded to the threads about extra charges. Are you aware of any add’l charges when using apps such as this or even the Verichat IM client?

Apps like BBtoday and other “running in the background” apps for the Blackberry can add additional charges to your bill if you set the app to poll often for updates. An example would be setting your “Weather Updates” to once every 30 minutes or less. THe app uses GPRS to download updates, and if you don’t have unlimited kilobytes for GPRS downloads at your disposal (hosted mail is not included in this, I believe) you could end up getting a *fat* bill for kilobytes used that were over your “free” amount. Depending on how your account is structured, you may only get one meg or even 500k of downloads for free. After that, you pay per kilobyte, and the price depends on your account once again.

Bottom line – check out your account specifics before heavily using an app like this. GPRS is about 40k-60k *bits* per second, so around 6k-7k bytes per second. Keep an eye on the up/down arrows in the upper right and do the math.

    Regards,

    Jim

If you’re having problems with ‘Bad DNS’ or other messages you might want to check out the thread at BlackberryForums (http://www.blackberryforums.com/showthread.php?t=1870) thay have a host of resolutions for this.

As for the review they did…”The BBToday screen is not as pretty as your normal home screen” Pretty??? LOL since when is a business device supposed to be pretty? LOL Actually I prefer this view over the regular home screen as the author points out it has a lot of useful info

The link to DL the application is not working. It takes me to SourceForge.net and there is nothing to DL on the site.

i think this is a great tool – congrats to the design folks!

however, i have an error and a suggestion:
error: the weather location id ‘freezes’ my BB7290 until i plug it back into my desktop at which time it gives me the error “…app killed…message que overflow”. i’m operating on handheld v4.0.0.219 with BES v3.6 . please help.

suggestion: i think it would be helpful if the BBToday replaced the Keyboard Lock screen or replaced the Standby Screen so that instead of accessing the app, it automatically activated when the unit was keyboard locked manually or by timer.

This is a great program. It does generate some wireless web traffic but you can adjust the frequency of the updates to your likings. I have had some problems with the stock ticker. Seems to be a bit troublesome on all of our handhelds in the company. Works pretty well overall and you can’t beat the price.

Another US application? It does not seem as if the weather or stock quotes work outside the US in Australia, for example.
Can I get all “current tasks” in the bbtoday view? Seems like it only takes things that are dated as “today”.

I have a BlackBerry 7100g on Telstra network in Australia. I’ve Installed BBToday from a website link and it is asking for me to allow access to xoap.weather.com but I can’t seem to bring the window into focus to allow it. I cannot uninstall the app as it doesn’t show in BB manager and I’ve tried removing/replacing battery. Also can’t seem to go anywhere on the phone as it’s not easy to navigate with a big window always on top. Any suggestions? -raf

Can some one tell me where to find a list with all the stock codes? I would like to follow a Belgian stock code on Euronext called Fortis.

    You can find it here:
