Turkcell , the leading provider of mobile communications in Turkey, today held a press conference in Istanbul to launch Turkey’s first BlackBerry service. Ali Kesan, Turkcell’s Chief Marketing and Sales Officer, announced that through its agreement with Canada-based Research in Motion (“RIM”) Turkcell will be providing another value-added service that “will make life smoother for our customers and increase their productivity”.
Through the agreement between Turkcell and RIM, signed during the Canadian-Turkish Business Council’s Annual Conference, Blackberry service in Turkey is to be provided initially for corporate users with Turkcell offering the BlackBerry 7290 wireless handheld and the BlackBerry 7100g business phone. Customers will use Turkcell’s BlackBerry service under monthly or annual contracts. The service will be provided for individual users from the 4th Quarter of 2005.
Turkcell will be offering BlackBerry Enterprise Solution(tm) (BES) for business users. BES software tightly integrates with Microsoft(r) Exchange, IBM Lotus(r) Domino(tm) and Novell GroupWise(r) and works with existing enterprise systems to enable secure, push-based wireless access to email and other corporate data. For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Solution(tm) (BIS) allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal email accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and popular ISP email accounts) from a single device.
The BlackBerry 7290 and 7100g are both quad band mobile handsets (850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz) that integrate email, phone and organiser, as well as Internet browser and text messaging functions. Both devices include Bluetooth(r) supporting the use of a wireless headset or car kit for hands-free calls. The iconic BlackBerry 7290 features the familiar QWERTY keyboard, and the BlackBerry 7100g boasts SureType keypad technology, which effectively converges a phone keypad and a QWERTY keyboard to fit elegantly within the size constraints of a traditional ’candy bar’ phone design.
Ali Kesan, Chief Marketing and Sales Officer at Turkcell, said that Turkcell was delighted to be providing BlackBerry service for its customers as a result of this international partnership. “We believe that the agreement with RIM, the world leader in push-based mobile access to e-mail and applications technology, will also positively impact the development of Turkish-Canadian commercial relations” said Mr. Kesan. “I believe our BlackBerry service, provided as a total solution, once again demonstrates Turkcell’s role as Turkey’s technology leader in mobile communications and our commitment to our customers.”
RIM Business Development Director, Paul Lucier, said that they are excited to start working in the Turkish market. RIM Business Development Manager, Syed Shah, added that the BlackBerry is a crucial service for business people and that RIM is working to expand it further. “As a part of RIM’s globalisation strategy, RIM is very pleased to be available in the fast growing Turkish market,” said Syed Shah.
Canada’s Ambassador to Ankara, Michael Leir, said that the RIM and Turkcell partnership will further the relations between Turkey and Canada.
