Although your Blackberry native short cuts may not function when on the PocketDay page, the app includes a fully customizable set of short cuts including all the usual culprits (compose, go to next day, etc..), as well as definable links to non-standard applications – basically anything you have installed. On the 7100t, these short cuts are accessed using the function key and then the assigned key, pressing just one of the number keys itself activates the customizable speed dial function – by far the easiest way to quickly dial you favorite numbers.
In addition to all these PDA type features, the developer has made use of the Blackberry’s data connected status to make current weather and stock quotes available at a glance. Define your favorite locations (by ZIP) and the stocks you are losing money on and they are tracked on the PocketDay page with updates at defined intervals (mind you data volume if you don’t have an unlimited plan).
Documentation
Two help files are included in the ZIP and for a change they are actually ‘helpful’. The fist is a Quick Start Guide which for most will not be required – 5 minutes of playing will get you most of what is in there thanks to the intuitive interface.
The other file is a more in depth help files that covers the full app in depth. It’s well written with screen shots throughout to lead you though any of the more complex configurations.
In addition to the help files is the Read Me – the usual installation guide with a list of known issues and a full release history. I wish all software was as well documented and supported.
Issues
Having used the app for about a week now, I can honestly say there is very little I would change. Personally I prefer a graphical view of my calendar for the week rather than list and I have not found a way to change that. I have not had a single data, response time or reliability issue.
Conclusion
For Blackberry die hards, I guess they may say why bother – I’ve learnt all the short cuts and I’m used to how I do it. For anyone who has ever been frustrated by the time or effort it takes to get to a given piece of data (which admittedly is not that great given how well the Blackberry solutions are designed) or who is coming from a conventional PDA to Blackberry for the first time, this app is a must and should be the first thing you buy once you have your device up and running. I install and remove lots of tools based on how useful they are – this one is here for the long haul.
The program is available for $19.95 at Neon Toad, http://www.neontoad.com
