WorldCam Viewer Reviewed

Worldcam Viewer
Who needs to travel, when you can sightsee the world right from your Blackberry with Worldcam Viewer. Ok, so we’re stretching it a bit but this quirky program made by Virtual Views caught enough of our attention that we wanted to try it out. It allows you to get webcam feeds from various webcams located around the world straight to your Blackberry. Read further to read what we have to say about it …

Installation

There are two versions of the program, a personal version and a corporate version. Personal viewer is meant for Blackberry users who are not connected to a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server), while the corporate version is meant for BES users. Both versions come in around the 63kb mark and need to be installed via the Desktop Manager.

Features

Worldcam Viewer comes with 100 webcam feeds from all around the world. We should point out that the majority of webcams are from United States and Europe. Japan is the only country represented for Asia and there are no feeds from Africa. However, the United States and European feeds represent a good portion of the main tourists’ attractions and cities like the Capitol Hill, Eiffel Tower, Times Square, Venice, London, etc.

You can save the pictures for later viewings but the pictures are not saved to your photo album so it’s not possible to use them as your wallpaper. Other features like the QuickStream where it automatically refreshes your image can be useful if something exciting is going on but be warned because it will kill your monthly allowable data transfer. There is a built-in automatic update feature where the author can update the webcam list. When we first ran it, we got about 15 new webcams from around the world and on the website the author states that user requests “will be considered”.

Now on to the negative aspect of the program, we found many dead webcam feeds so the actual number is less than 100. None of the webcams for the country of Australia worked and the biggest disappointment, the ‘Shark Webcam’ of the London Aquarium didn’t either. Just like how the update feature adds new webcam feeds it should also take away the dead ones, it reflects badly on Webcam Viewer.

Conclusion

This program is a novelty program, it doesn’t really serve much purpose and after awhile the program does lose its appeal. Just like when you were younger and forced your parents to buy that new video game only to stop playing it 2 weeks later, this is how we feel about Worldcam Viewer. However the program is only priced at $9.99 so you’re not losing much.

The program is available for $9.99 at Neon Toad, http://www.neontoad.com

FYI, we are in the process of updating the webcam feed and an update should be available next week.

One thing you forgot to mention is that users can add additional webcams to the list on their own.
Many of our customers use this feature to view their own home security webcams.

A lot of users find this program really fun and entertaining, BTW.

In fact, many have commented to us that it’s their favorite program on BlackBerry.

Really, it’s OK if you just want to watch. ;-)
