You see it almost everyday on the streets and in public, teenagers furious typing away on their cell phones SMS’ing or texting their friends. Europe and Japan, SMS has become main stream but SMS is still much the domain of teenagers in North America, but that is slowly changing. It is the youth equivalent of an executive typing and sending an email on their Blackberry. However there are still times that we Blackberry users need to send out an SMS, usually to reach non-Blackberry users. Other than Nextel and Mike Telus users, all of us can compose an SMS one at a time on our Blackberry, but a new program called SMS Broadcast by DiziLife lets us automatically send out the same SMS to multiple recipients.
The main menu of the program is very straight-forward, you have a write screen, draft box, send box, and distribution list. The learning curve for the program is minimal and you should be able to broadcast an SMS on the first try. To do that, just go to the write screen and type your message. You should note that a SMS message is limited to 912 characters. After you’re done you can either send out to a pre-existing list you created or make a new one. There is no ability to send out to only one recipient unless you create a new list solely for that phone number which is a bit of work. It would have been nice to have this feature for Nextel and Telus users because they are unable to send out an SMS but for other users it would have been pointless.
Creating and managing your list is also very straight-forward. When creating a list you would first be asked to name the list and then enter your recipients. There is a nice feature where you can automatically import from your Blackberry address book. The only mandatory information that is required is the phone number, entering a name or description is optional. Although it is probably in your best interest to take the extra few seconds to enter a description so you actually know who you’re sending out the SMS messages instead of some phone number.
