There is also a toolbar at the top of the screen (if you’ve turned it on) that contains an option that lets you access common commands quickly, and also change the color of the font and/or the background color. In order to access the toolbar, you must hold down Alt and click the thumb-wheel. All the commands work as expected and typically work very well. The only menu command that seemed to be slightly cumbersome was the Next Font and Previous Font options. It was much quicker for us to highlight the text we wanted to change and use the toolbar to choose the appropriate font from a drop down instead of going through the fonts one by one via the menu.

The layout of eWord makes the program about as easy to use at it can be given the amount of screen real-estate available. All colors, stylizing, indentations, and bullet points show up as they should and are easily changed by highlighting the appropriate text. The only thing we wish would have been improved was the way larger and smaller font sizes as well as different fonts show up on the screen. On our testing 7100t, there was only a slight difference in text size between 12pt and 24pt, and no difference between the 12pt and 14pt. Also, all the different fonts we chose were displayed on-screen in the same font - although they did properly convert when editing the .doc file on a PC.

Perhaps one of the more notable features of the program is the Spelling option. While you may get away with a few typos in your usual emails, you want to make sure your business documents are free of spelling mistakes. The spell check (menu >> tools >> spelling) provides a remarkably quick and flexible way to proof your document. As with the standard PC spell check built into many programs, eWord presents the options to change spelling of potentially misspelled words as well as letting you add, chang, change all, ignore, and ignore all. The response time of the spell checking was typically very responsive and we found ourselves spell checking away in around 10 seconds or less after choosing the option from the menu. Don’t speak English? The spell check option is available in many different languages, and can be easily configured using the Language option under the Tools menu.

The E-mail option from the File menu is very convenient but does have its limitations. It allows you to send the file you’re currently working with as either an attachment or HTML email. All the HTML emails we sent were very well formatted and appeared very close, if not identical, to the way the text was laid out on our screen. The only drawback to this feature is that you are unable to enter any sort of message into the email, only a subject. If you want to send the document as an attachment and have some text in the email, you are forced to save the document and then open eWorks, compose a new message, attach the file, type your message, and finally send it.

We were also quite excited when we saw the option to print the document. Every time we tried to use this option, we were greeted with an error that said “Cannot connect to server (503 null). Please try again later.” The provided documentation did not help us with this issue, and in fact pretty much breezed over the entire topic. After contacting support, we found out that the print and fax options are only available to their corporate customers for the time being.
