Allentown Police To Experiment with Blackberry

City police here are getting a handheld wireless computer as part of a program organized by the Pennsylvania State Police. Four Allentown officers are to share one Nextel Blackberry computer, passing it along during shift changes.

The idea is to allow officers on foot and bike patrols to get the same sort of information that officers in police cruisers get with their cars’ computers. Currently, officers outside of cars need to ask a radio dispatcher for records such as a person’s criminal background and driver history.
