Sources Say Sprint, Nextel Deal Advancing At FCC

Staff members at the Federal Communications Commission have drafted a proposal recommending approval of the merger between Sprint Corp. and Nextel Communications Inc., according to sources close to the agency, The Washington Post reports in its Tuesday edition.

The agency’s four commissioners are considering the proposal approving the $35 billion deal, sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity because deliberations are still underway, the Post said. Some commissioners are concerned that the companies expect to miss a deadline to offer 911 emergency calling over their phones, but final approval could be granted as early as the end of the month, a source said.
