Configure Lightweight Directory Access Protocol for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Comments

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is a tcp/ip protocol that enables users to locate people, organizations, and other resources in an Internet directory or intranet directory. This enables the Blackberry Enterprise Server to use LDAP instead of the default Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) for specific functions. Four registry entries are used to configure the Lightweight Directory Access protocol (LDAP) for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Here’s how:

LDAPDomain

This LDAPDomain entry configures the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to use a specific domain when performing LDAP searches.

1. For BlackBerry Enterprise Server versions 3.5 and 3.6, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Servers\, where is the name of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

For BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.0, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
2. Create a REG_SZ registry key called LDAPDomain, and change the entry in the Value data field to the domain that will be used if the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is running in one domain, but the user accounts are in another domain.

LDAPSearch

The LDAPSearch entry configures the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to use LDAP to do an Address Lookup.

1. For versions 3.5 and 3.6, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Servers\, where is the name of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

For version 4.0, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Agents.
2. To enable LDAP Address Lookup, create a REG_DWORD registry key called LDAP Search, and change the entry in the Value data field to a Hexadecimal value of 1.

LDAPport

The LDAPport entry configures the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to use a specific LDAP port for searches.

2. To use a specific LDAP port for searches, create a REG_DWORD registry key called LDAPport, and change the entry in the Value data field to the specific LDAP port that will be used.

LDAPssl

The LDAPssl entry enables the use of LDAP over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for searches or lookups.

2. To enable the use of LDAP over SSL, create a REG_DWORD registry key called LDAPssl, and change the entry in the Value data field to a Hexadecimal value of 1.

To create a registry key

1. To open the Registry Editor, click Start > Run and type regedit.
2. Go to the desired location.
3. Right-click on the folder, click New > Key to create a REG_SZ registry key, or click New > DWORD Value to create a REG_DWORD registry key.
4. Enter the name of the new key and press ENTER.
5. Double-click on the new key to change the value of the key as required, then click OK.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
