Smart Dialing Configuration

Smart Dialing
Yesterday, we told you how to unlock your phone if you’re travelling overseas. Today we’re going to show you how to setup smart dialing and configure dialing for your appropriate area. The smart dialing feature on the handheld allows you to set a default Country Code and Area Code. To call a number with the default area code, you need to dial only seven digits, whether you are calling from within the area code or outside it. Smart dialing also allows you to store the number for a corporation. To reach an extension within that corporation, you need to dial only Alt + 8 (letter X) and the extension.

To configure smart dialing go to Phone –> Options –> Smart Dialing.

Country Code -The code for the country which you call most frequently.

Area Code – The area code which you call most frequently.

National Number Length – The number of digits in the telephone number including Area Code but excluding Country Code.

Corporate Phone Number - The number of the corporation which you call most frequently.

Wait For – The length of the pause in seconds between connecting to the corporation and dialing the extension.

Extension Length – The number of digits in the extensions at the corporation called most frequently.

  • PS

I want to use our corporate phone lookup feature (which returns the only last 4 digits of an individual’s phone number) with a corporate prefix (first 7 digits). Any way to do that?

I can’t get this option to work for me..just the smart dial function so that I don’t have to put in the area code every time I dial a number that’s not one of my contacts!!! Could it be that my carrier doesn’t support this function? They did on my treo, so I don’t know why it won’t work!

I can’t get the Smart Dialing work for me in my BB 8900. It used to work on other BB that I had before (curve) with the same carrier, so the carrier is not the problem. When I go into Phone/Options/Smart Dial, I have done everything that the Smart Dialing Configuration tells me to do, but it still does not work. Can somebody help me?

Sorry I should mention this is for the Storm to be able to use the smart dialing feature. All other models simply put an x in front of the extension number.

If you are using the Storm, Moses and you don’t see an add pause, couple things. try removing your battery for 30 seconds and see if you can see it and if you still can’t see it, then see if there is a newer patch for your device.

I have a 9000 Bold. When using Browser, smartphone indicates must pay a fee with local phone carrier. I thought it would be posssible to connect to wi-fi wireless LAN without additional cost. Can someone help with this?
Thanks for Smart dialing info, the extra digit at the beginning was driving me crazy.

    Hi Jorge

Not sure where you live but in Canada, you still have to have a data plan with the carrier and if you have VOIP ability on your smartphone you have to have an additional plan to use that too. Poor carriers need to make money too :-)

Jorge, I have a bold as well but my smart dialing is not working or maybe i am doing something wrong. Have you experience the same problem? When i dial a number it does not dial the country code. it dials only the number itself. Sorry, but let me know if you know something about it.

I think this Smart Dialing is darn stupid. I have a Tour and I set it to my country code. Inside my phone book there are some numbers stored with country code, the same country I’m dialing from. The country code was included in phone number when I saved it directly from incoming call.

So with this setup, those numbers with country code (+60-555-5555) included couldn’t get through. An error from my Telco auto machine telling me that the number dialed is incomplete. However those numbers without country code (555-5555) can get through without any problem. There are two solutions: Either change all my phone book numbers to exclude the +60 country code; Or change the country code (under Smart Dialing menu) to “unknown”. The second method would sort of disable the stupid Smart Dialing. Me having more than 250 entries in my phone book, I of course go for the second option. Now both numbers with or without country code could get through.

Those Nokia and Motorola phones that I used before never have such problem.
