Weekend Contest ‘New Blackberry Software Store Ideas’

Neon Toad
Neon Toad a new Blackberry software that’s yet to be launched will soon start offering Blackberry software for individual handhelds and software that will integrate with the BES. They came to us, wanting to get feedback from our readers about what they want to see in a new Blackberry software store and how to improve the purchase process.

We said forget it, we didn’t want to be used as a tool for free marketing research. They then told us they wanted to offer three $100 gift certificates to our readers as a Weekend Contest prize. We couldn’t say no to that, so post your ideas about what you want to see in a new Blackberry software store. Winners of the $100 gift certificate will be announced Monday morning.

Neon Toad is set to launch mid-October.

I think anything is better than Handango right now. I’m glad to see someone trying to disrupt their monopoly. I didn’t mind Handango until I had to talk to their ‘customer service’, which is pretty much non-existant.

My suggestion is to treat the customer properly and then people will come.

OTA install and demos would be extremely useful and would encourage me to try out more applications.

I am interested in more customizable WAP sites, since my company does not allow 3rd party applications to be installed on our BB’s.

    Thanks,

Make the site BlackBerry Browser compatible so you can browse, try, buy, and download all from a BB.

I would go with a credit system or rewards points program. Buy 3 programs get 5 bucks off of another one. I would also suggest not ripping off the programmers or vendors who produce the products like handango who has a 40% markup of every purchase. The most the markup should be is 5%

There should def. be a points system. If you take the time and give a good review of a product, you should be rewarded. 50 points = 5 bucks. That way if users begin to put value into your store with quality reviews, people like me will flock to it and read it. And while i am there i might actually purchase something.

Have different color percentages for all products like, green % for quality of application. Yellow % fun for games. Red % for productivity.

    example..

    Product: Blackberrycool.com (Green)(93% – Extreme quality)

    price:$…..

    Description:…..

    Points earned: 5
    Pointes to redeem: 75

User reviews: (From better quality reviews on down)

I know in the long run, everyone is trying to sell their product or websites like this have advertisers who support these sites with there programs, but if a rating system is in place, it will force programmers and companies to make better products and thus people wil buy more and become loyal.

Lets face it, when you buy an app for blackberry you have no real idea how it works or how you will respond to it, or if it will be useful to you in anyway. There are many factors that are left to the unknown that reviews will help.

sorry for the rant… that is what i would like to see from a blackberry store.

I think everyone should be able to write a review unlike on handago where just people that purchase it can review. Why can people that use the trial write a review??

    REPLY to Phil Secker-

Have you seen user reviews on amazon? Good example is movies and music.

Really dumb people give movies and artists great reviews even before an albuim or movie comes out. The say “ohh it looks really cool, can’t wait to see it”

These people make the user reviews completely a waste of time.

Strongly encourage (require?) vendors to have demo/eval versions of their software. A lot of BB software is written generically for smart-phone/devices and just doesn’t work well on the BB. Let me try it before I buy it!

    Ability to demo software OTA.
Prompt knowledgable response from customer service, not just an auto-reply and then nothing.
Links to other BB vendors, maybe for items not directly competing with yours, but of interest to BB users.

    Thanks!

I would like to see more payment methods and perhaps the possibility to have a cd with all files you bought send to you for a little fee…

I’m 100% more likely to purchase if there’s a bug-free trial available — and I’ll even forward a link to my coworkers if there’s an OTA install! I hate having to keep a sync cable with me just for installs. And I refuse to purchase anything before I try it.

The online store should have screen shots available for ALL software, not just a small selection ala handango. I don’t really want to have to go to the software designer’s website or try to find a review of the software to find out whether the program is asthetically worth the price…

The Blackberry community lacks the wealth of software compared to the Palm and Pocket PC platforms. Besides the obvious support for all available software via OTA, there should be a portion of Neon Toad dedicated as a developers portal combing all available resources for Blackberry software and Blackberry specific web development. By providing a best in class portal for Blackberry development resources, they can help grow the market also. In essence they would become Blackberry software “farmers” by encouraging and stimulating the growth and then having a “road side stand” to sell them at also.

Agree with the other comments about OTA downloads.

While I like the screenshots that Handango, I don’t care for the animated .gif – why can’t they just be separate pictures?

    Live chat support.

    RSS Feed for new products.

Send out coupons & other specials

Tonight I downloaded(OTA)a Texas Hold’em game from a company called Magmic through a link on the Blackberry Cool WAP site. After the download I checked out the game, which had a 48 hour trial. I liked it so I chose “register” on the game interface and Iwas brought to a screen to enter credit card info. Once transmitted (OTA)it Automatically applied the unlock key and I was good to go. All in the span of a few minutes. Sweet! Make it easy!

Cross platform useability would be a huge asset. An online store for mobile devices should be fully accessible from mobile devices. I should be able to search, browse, download and purchase directly on my desktop, BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile, etc.

As an aside … Is there significance to the name “Neon Toad”?

Right now, anything other than Handango will work just fine. Try to do what is NOT Handango.BB users should be given a beta or trial version to evaluate.

NeonToad should make some aoftwares available for FREE DOWNLOAD if it reaches the necessary critical mass i.e. a certain volume of sales. That would encourage BB owners to support a product to its financial objectives. We understand you want and need to make some bucks. fair and square. But customer loyalty MUST come with rewards! May Neon Toad Be Better Than Handango (Wake Up Call!)

I believe that offering better, cheaper alternatives (perhaps even freeware!) to office software (ie eOffice) on the blackberry would be a wonderful idea. Indeed, I use my blackberry to write essays and refine notes (I am a university student) during my crowded, 2 hour long bus commute when pulling out a laptop is simply not an option. I have been using the memo pad so far, and it offers only simple word processing, which is nothing compared to eOffice. However, eOffice costs upwards of $100, something I just can’t afford.

Also, offering themes for purchase might be a good idea, as the default blackberry look gets a bit dull after awhile.

A wider library of interesting games would also be very nice, as I like to take a break every so often with my blackberry.
