Exchange 2003 Sevice Pack 2 Released

Exchange SP2
Microsoft has released the second service pack for Exchange Server 2003 with promised improvements for mobile email, including new technology that pushes emails from Exchange directly onto mobile devices. This new push-email capability is said to be the biggest threat against RIM’s monopoly on push-email. With RIM’s Blackberry service that requires the use of middleware on top of Exchange to allow messages to be sent directly to BlackBerry devices, new SP2 will automatically push emails to Windows Mobile 5.0 devices at no additional licensing charge.

This is where things get interesting, Blackberry platform works on different mail software including Exchange, Lotus, and Novell. Along with the continual adoption of Blackberry Connect, there is no need for users to be tied to a Blackberry handheld or the Blackberry OS. Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available on different handhelds aswell, but users will be forced to use the same OS. So the tactic for RIM is to try to become the platform leader whereas Microsoft will be trying to undermine that by commoditizing push-email by offering it for ‘free’. Yes indeed, the next few months will be very interesting …

Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 is available as a free download for existing Exchange Server 2003 users from Other new features include better protection to users against spam and a few other mailbox enhancements.
