Landlines Losing Users

Comments

Between 23-37% of US wireless subscribers will use a wireless phone as their primary telephone by 2009, up from 9.4% at present, according to a recent report by In-Stat. Mobile wireless services have quickly become a viable alternative to traditional landline service for a large number of consumers in the US, said In-Stat. With wireline-to-wireless number portability introduced as part of the Wireless Local Number Portability (WLNP) mandate in November 2003, consumers now have an unprecedented degree of flexibility and convenience in cutting the cord on their landlines, the research firm stated.

In-Stat found that among those with a wireless and landline phone, resistance to wireless substitution has dropped dramatically from data released by its 2003 survey. Barriers to landline replacement, particularly in-building coverage and perceived inconvenience (such as losing DSL or having to change the phone number) are resolvable with other technologies, continued network build-out or consumer education, In-Stat pointed out in the report.

RIM Denied Supreme Court Appeal

Comments

The chief justice of the United States on Wednesday declined to suspend a patent infringement ruling against the maker of the BlackBerry wireless e-mail device while the Supreme Court considers whether to hear an appeal. U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts rejected a request by Research In Motion Ltd. to stay a lower court’s patent infringement ruling while the high court decides whether to hear a RIM appeal.

Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM could still refile its request for a stay with one of the other Supreme Court justices. But RIM said in a statement it expected the next step in the case would be a scheduling conference before a lower court, which could be held within weeks, setting the timing for further proceedings.

RIM shares rose 42 cents to $57.82 in mid-afternoon trading on Nasdaq.

Worldwide Smartphone Market Soars in Q3

Comments

The continuing shift from standalone handhelds to converged smart mobile devices was confirmed again by the latest estimates released by analyst firm Canalys. The positions of the top four device vendors worldwide remained unchanged from Q2, with HP displacing Japanese smart phone vendor Fujitsu to take fifth place.

Nokia maintained its huge lead, with year-on-year growth of 142% being almost twice the market average. Particularly successful were its 3G Symbian Series 60 based smart phones, including the Nokia 6680, 6630, N90 and N70, but older devices, such as the 6600, continued to contribute to shipments, particularly in developing regions. Nokia’s overall global market share position remains supported by its strength in EMEA, which Canalys estimates accounted for just under 70% of the vendor’s smart phone shipments in Q3.
