Ask Us! SOS Is Indicated

BlackBerry SOSGeorge asked us,

For some reason my BlackBerry is now showing ‘SOS’ where the reception bar indicators use to show. No emails are received and I can’t place any calls.

The SOS indicates that you can only place emergency calls. Usually this means that you have a bad SIM card in your device, either one that has been corrupted or one from another carrier that is not compatible with your BlackBerry. You will either need to replace the SIM with a SIM from the carrier of your handheld or get your BlackBerry unlock. This feature is actually something that the carriers don’t really advertise. Where you are able to place emergency calls to 911, even if you don’t have a carrier account, just need a working cell phone.

SOS… 8350i Blackberry Nextel Flashed to Boost. I did a handheld wipe. Then I turned of my phone and turned it back on. Go to options.. advanced options… service books then holy alt and hit S B E B.. It will say Legacy enabled. After that plug ur phong into ur computer. Go to blackberrt desktop. Backup and restore. Restore. Click on ur file (Service books. Flashed program. if u dont have buy it from somebody) download new service books. Turn off n turn back back on. And this will work. I have to do this every 2 weeks so my Blackberry can work on with Boost. Thasts the only down side. If ur worried about ur apps or info getting lost make a back up file then upload it after this process. And u can always upload ur contacts and pics to ur phone from ur sim card. The handheld wipe will not wipe ur sim card. Hope this helps people. Happy Boosting

    Ciao,

I have sos problem on my blackberry.
I have agreemnent with network witch has national roaming contract.
Of course I am on automatic mode and it happends that under the antena panel of my operator I notice reselection to the roaming network.
Via BB it is possible to measure signal strenght and in that spots signal of may network is even better than roaming network signal.
It is interestenting that not on all blackberies it happande and not for all SIM’s.
Ho BB service can affect reselection operation.
Reselection can happen only if I don’t have good level of the signal in the network and I am re-marking thata I am under the antenna.
B B is making some bigg mess.

DDEvine, thanks a bunch! I came to this forum all the way from the Bahamas. I have a BB 87000g and I was using the sim card to place in my other phones so that I could have enter codes to unlock them. Then when I returned the sim card to my bb it said insert sim card! This really confused me because I had already inserted the sim card. This went on for about two hours and nothing was happening, until I came to your forum and read your individual posts and when I did what DDEvine said that the card may be in backwards, so I took it out and did as he said and, like magic it worked beautifully! I place it in so the numbers are visible to the end that isexposed!

Hope thishelp some if not all of you!

I was having these same problems with my blackberry. I took the battery out and then replaced the sims card and put the battery back on. After that, i shoved a piece of paper in between the area where the battery and the sims card are located and the phone has been working great since! I think that sometimes the card just needs to be more tightly connected to the metal.

I have a unlocked Black Berry Flip and about 2 days ago the indicator suddenly changed to SOS. I just pulled the battery out and put it back in after 1 minute, worked like a charm ;)

    @ Wendy Briggs

Are you sure it is unlocked? Because if it isn’t then that would be a problem. Also, if it is then try pulling the battery out then putting it back in technique, if it doesnt work you might want to refund it and get another one.

i just bought a new unlocked blackberry (bold), and yes I'm sure it's unlocked. I never really had signal with it, when I reboot it i have signal for a couple seconds but then it goes back to SOS.. I tried everything I could find on the Internet.. nothing worked. Sim card works with my other phone perfectly. Dang, I was so exited to get my new phone and now its not even working?? Guess I'll have to got to the at&t store tomorrow to get advice :/
    this is pissing me off

  • Sunsetlounge

I had the SOS on my Blackberry Bold — seemingly for no reason, the phone had been on and left in the purse. I went to “manage connections” and checked everything — mobile network, wi-fi and bluetooth and now everything is fine. My point is, it may not be because of a bad sim card, although my solution may not work for everyone

  • Selima

Thanks the piece of paper worked.

I have Blackberry flip 8220, even i experianced the Insert SIM Card or Invalid SIM Card with SOS problem after having it almost a year, initially i didn't realize what caused the problem, maybe i thought bad reception or something, i had to take the battery out and put it back in again, restart and it worked normal but problem occured frequently. Actually it's the problem of OS of the phone, the model is defective. I called the csr and explained the problem, instead of replacing the phone for free, they told i need to upgrade as my warranty expired even though i am still in contract with the phone. The company should take responsibility and replace the phone with no charge. It's not the problem with the SIM, it's the problem with the phone.

Got an SOS today. Tried stuff done by others here still nothing happened. So no solutions yet?

  • Alannakelly_

My blackberry bold says SOS atleast 6 times everyday. It seems like everytime I’m in an area of a building or somewhere that I may not get service it does it. I usually turn it off and back on and it receives service again but sometimes it does it on its own. It used to just say “No Service” like a normal phone would but now it just automatically goes to SOS. Its really annoying and I would like it to stop.

  • Nighttrainowens

    Go to manage connections
    Then change to global
    This will fix it

  • Shaggypete

this worked for me, thanks! had been on SOS for 48 hrs, had tried booting (soft reset and hard reset), turning off connections and turning back on, no luck–but nighttrainowens’s fix worked.

    manage connections
    mobile network options
network technology — change to “global”

Move yourself and your phone away from your current location (more than 20 metres) and try again. If it works then you need to consider if someone has a signal blocking device nearby.

Thank you sooo much!! I woke up this morning and had the SOS symbol in the antenna area on my BB Bold. I looked through the manual, then gave up and came online. This is exactly what I did, and it worked instantly. :)
