Alltel urges RIM to settle BlackBerry Dispute

U.S. wireless carrier Alltel Corp. has urged Research in Motion Ltd. to settle a legal dispute involving its popular BlackBerry device, the Wall Street Journal reported. RIM is in an ongoing legal dispute with patent holding company NTP Inc. This is the first time a carrier has gone public and urged RIM to settle their case.

Alltel told RIM it is concerned about the impact of a possible BlackBerry-service shutdown on its roughly 100,000 e-mail customers. In addition to Alltel, several other large U.S. operators have contacted RIM over the matter. Analysts say the United States is RIM’s largest single market.
