Taking screenshots of your actual Blackberry

There may be times where you will need to take actual screenshots of your Blackberry, perhaps to prove your high score in Brickbreaker or if you need to send a picture of your Blackberry problem to your Blackberry administrator.

To take screenshots, do the following:

1. Install the Blackberry JDE, you can find the install files here …

2. Open up a DOS window by going to Run and typing in ‘cmd’.

3. Switch to the directory that contains the file Javaloader.exe, which by default is c:\program files\research in motion\blackberry jde 4.1.0\bin

4. Connect your Blackberry device via USB.

5. Take screenshots by typing in the command: javaloader -u screenshot c:\[name].jpg

    I wanted to point out 1 minor mistake in this entry, and tell you about a couple better solutions.

    The mistake: JavaLoader can only save screenshots in in Bitmap (BMP) format. It can’t save files with JPG extentions.

    I agree that JavaLoader is great for taking screenshots of a BlackBerry. I wrote a couple of batch files to simplify the task. One is called BBScreen and the other is JL_Cmder. Both leverage JavaLoader, but without having to download the HUGE BlackBerry JDE. Actually, they are both less than 100KB compress for your downloading pleasure.

    What is the difference between BBScreen and JL_Cmder? BBScreen ONLY takes screenshots, nothing else. It was designed for the help desk to email to an end-user to capture an error they are experiencing. JL_Cmder is more powerful and geared toward usage by experienced BlackBerry support personel. Why, JL_Cmder allows for the use of the WIPE command. If you haven’t used it before, it completely erases the handheld operating system and any files on the device.

    I have worked on screenshots as well and created a small window program that allows you to take screenshots, save them in differnet formats, add frames, resize – all with a click.
