Intel to drop BlackBerry chips?

intel logoReports are coming out that Intel is planning to sell off several of its communications businesses as part of a major restructuring due to heavy losses. Of interest to BlackBerry Cool readers are the XScale and IXP chips Intel uses for mobile phones, portable devices and network equipment. While Intel is not planning on selling these operations, they have been earmarked for disposal.

The XScale processors have been recently used in the 8700 and 7130 BlackBerrys. What this means for the continued production of these models, or of future BlackBerrys, is unknown, but we’ll keep you informed.

    xscale processors are used in all manor of devices, including many PocetPCs. RIM will not be alone.
