[...] One thing that is certain, however, is that the market’s not listening to him. RIM’s shares rose 3.12 USD, or 4%, to 77.72 USD yesterday, and have shown a steady increase since this happened. What a novel idea, RIM: instead of allowing market paranoia about your ability to compete drive your share price down, “leaked” shots about your hot new device have built hype and raised your market value. Hmm, there’s a lesson here somewhere. [...]

[...] The Weekend Contests have been a little anemic lately. It’s not anyone’s fault, really — there just hasn’t been any news recently worth talking about. This week changes everything, however; there’s no longer any excuse not to post a thought provoking (or Thought Provoking) comment to win sweet, sweet prizes. Tell us what you think about the name. Tell us what you think about RIM’s consumer push. Tell us what you think about the Pearl coming to T-Mobile first. Tell us what you think about its new features. Tell us what you think about it not having a scroll wheel. Tell us why you might want to wait for an 8700-styled version. No matter what you think, just make sure to tell us. [...]

"It is no secret that RIM has issues with providing bandwidth for blackberry services now"

Are you off your rocker? Unsubstatiated claims will get you nowhere. Carrier bandwidth is the bottleneck

I sincerely hope that the built-in applications are up to speed with the hardware. Integrating audio and video services in hardware is one thing (every phone on the market has this now) - the true test of the device will be how far RIM has gone to make pictures, audio and video available throughout the OS.

1] Will we be able to compose and read HTML email in which we can embed the pictures and video we take?

2] Will the browser allow us to upload the pictures and video to websites? The BB browser is good by mobile standards, but lacks some of the desktop functionality required to view content-rich websites and post multimedia to them...

3] Bandwidth? It is no secret that RIM has issues with providing bandwidth for blackberry services now - what will happen when those pipes are clogged with the latest 'You Tube' stupidity? Will email be delayed because QoS allows video higher priority to keep from dropping frames?

Questions that should be answered while we are all sitting here drooling ;-)

Looks to have the typical high build quality of all BB's...I'm sure this phone will do what it is designed to do very well.

The key to making this phone take off in the consumer market will be price. RIM cannot count on some Fortune 500 company or government agency with deep pockets willing to pay a price premium for their devices.

Of course, a certain segment of the consumer market will be willing to pay a relatively high price, but that's a relatively small segment. But if RIM wants this phone to really catch on and sell in higher volumes, it must come in a fairly reasonable price point, probably around the price of a Moto Q.

Of course, if RIM releases this device at a moderate price point, that oresumably would exert downward price pressure on their other units, since those units offer less features.

So RIM has a delicate balancing act on its hands; offer this unit at an attractive enough price, but not undermine the price points of their other units which they can sell at a premium to enterprise users.
