[...] That should be the case. In person. More communication. Less confusion. Less errors! But, you know, seems as though people are being too quick. Maybe RIM and the BlackBerry aren’t too late - maybe their early. Maybe they’ve got a revolution on their hands. We’ll see, I guess. [...]

[...] Ok, not literally. But boy, does a headline like that ever get your attention on a Tuesday morning. Talked about it last week, you know, RIM releasing their first ever BlackBerry in Japan - the 8703h with NTT DotComo. Well, seems as though RIM jumped the gun slightly, not enabling support for Japanese fonts on the device. Engadget reports that some form of solution will make it to the land of the rising sun in early 2007. “The best part? Existing BlackBerrys will be upgradeable, which bodes well for the 1,400-odd orders RIM’s received for their little bundles of email goodness since crossing the Pacific.” [...]

[...] What were you expecting? Unicorns and sunshine? But yes, this could go back to our weekend contest. Was the Pearl rushed out the door because of growing hype?
Given the new feature set of the pearl, expecting it to be bug free is completely unrealistic. While the OS version is 4.2, think of code to handles the trackball, media player, expansion card support and other new features as the first release. I have yet to see a perfect 1.0 release of anything.

Had there been a ton of issues with features that had been present in previous releases then I'd concede that it had been hasty. A consumer naturally expects everything to be perfect and given how radically different this device is from it's predecessors I'm perfectlly willing to allow a bit of extra room as people really start to use this new functionality for the first time.

Now how quickly they respond to these issues as they arise will be the true test in my opinion.

As a side note, I think this answers once and for all if Boy Genius works for RIM or not. Had he been an employee, would he not have known all the issues with the device prior to launch and been able to include that in his reviews?
