Decent news to toss your way from the “mobile browsing” bucket. Another little brother to the .com has made it’s way to the market.

Starting today, domain names ending in “.mobi” are available for purchase. Meant for sites that can be viewed near-seamlessly by your handheld device, a lot of companies are discounting it’s use and only buying to prevent copyright issues and the like – and well, because it really isn’t that necessary.

“…web developers said there was no technical benefit to using .mobi, as websites could be designed to adapt to mobile phone screens.”

    It’s possible to have a site that can identify your browser and show a compatible site. Try osnews.com or topix.net on your mobile and desktop. if you want a clear deliniation betweek desktop and mobile I’m an advocate for m.company.com rather then company.mobi.

    I knew of some sites, and I’m in agreeance, Shawn. Just a matter of getting everyone on board, I suppose.

    .mobi is a real pain in the ass to type on a mobile device as well.

    on my cell phone I need to type 6(pause)66622444 to get ‘mobi’ ‘com is 222666(pause)6

    if they were serious, they would have made it .m (6) or .wap (927)

    and yes, it is possible (though a little time consuming) to try and figure out desktop vs. device if you want to.
