When we got the word late last Friday about pics of the BlackBerry 8800 (that’s right Engadget, BlackBerryForums had it first), we weren’t expecting to be greeted with no less than 3 devices and talk of “Crimson” and “Indigo”. The forums have been ablaze this week with speculation about what that means, and we’re here to sort it out for you.
When we first told you about the BlackBerry 8800 last month, it was going by the code name “Gamma Ray” and was not to be coming with a camera. It appears now that the term “Gamma Ray” refers to a broad spectrum of 88xx devices (consider it a Gamma Ray burst, if you will).
Let us begin with the “Indigo”. Shown below, it seems to be the cameraless BlackBerry Boy Genius talked about, while still featuring microSD, multimedia features and the now ubiquitous scroll wheel. It is also apparently set to have WiFi support; it will not have a faster processor. Various sources (including the guy who leaked the shots) believe that we’ll see the “Indigo” before year’s end.
