Thanks to Gizmodo for picking up the ball on this. Nokia has released “Wibree” a short-range wireless technology that it will (reportedly) work alongside, or even replace Bluetooth thanks to the fact that it’s ten times as energy efficient. Apparently Nokia’s been trying to talk to Bluetooth about working together, but Bluetooth isn’t having any of that nonsense. You can see the full news report here.
“Wibree can integrate with Bluetooth, and like Bluetooth, communicates via radio at a distance of up to 30 feet. Wibree is more energy-efficient than Bluetooth, however, and will be cheaper to implement, according to Nokia. Wibree is so small, it could be used within intelligent clothing and jewelry such as wristwatches. “
