I just lived in Japan for a while, and it's obvious to me why the BlackBerry would be laughed at.

My Japanese phone allowed me to watch TV in real time. Not kidding. Futhermore I could RECORD PROGRAMS onto to, like TiVo. And lastly, it has a tilt screen to full qrty keyboard. I used it like a laptop for work.

The CHEAPEST phone you can buy from SoftBank (phone company) was about $60 and it had webbrowsing, camera, and email support.

Part of living in big Japanese cities as that you gotta take the train everywhere. Basically all people, from kids to the elderly, sit on their phones during that travel time. People watch TV, play high quality video games, or learn english from software.

BlackBerry is a wonderful phone. I used a Pearl in the US. But really its functionality is no where near the levels of the high end Japanese phones.

I have been seeking just to be able to read emails in Chinese and Japanese... NO LUCK with BB 8830.

If you cannot produce a smartphone which can read most popular langauges around the world, including Chinese and Japanese automatically... DO NOT CALL IT WORLD EDITION.

It is so deceiving! Just kindly get the patch done for us VICTIMS or let us know where to download it if you have any...

Otherwise, I love it and has been loyal customer for a long time!!! Thank you.

Take Action or competition will eat you up.

[...] With this move, RIM is diving head-first into a market that has yet to show much interest in BlackBerry. This has been in the works since at least October, and yet the 8707h is still packing an English QWERTY keypad. Japanese character input seems like a pretty basic, no-brainer way of supporting the language, don’t you think? Some think that an inability to make this change could leave the BlackBerry stillborn in Japan. Software support is groovy, RIM, but you gotta have the hardware that talks well with it. Pseudo-Japanese romanji ain’t gonna cut it - if you’re looking to really integrate with the market, you’re going to have to overhaul the keypad with kanji characters.
[...] Despite early reports, the BlackBerry appears to be doing alright in Asian markets - so much so that RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie is planning to get his devices into China and sees BlackBerry sales doubling in Asia over the next 12 months. So much optimism, it’s inspiring. “Balsillie said Research In Motion hoped to get approval from the Ministry of Information Industry in the first quarter of 2007 to begin shipping the BlackBerry, which helped popularize wireless e-mail, to the mainland market through the company’s partner, China Mobile.” [...]

Ha.. I am using a Blackberry evaluation unit from NTT Docomo in Tokyo. Finally... Blackberry has arrived in Japan. Japanese phones & mobile services are far over-rated and primarily appeal to teenagers and young women. I bet that once Japanese business people get their hands on a blackberry, with Japanese language support next year, they will ditch their cute little pink flip phones...

[...] Norman Lo could be considered Grady MacPherson. Grady was the official “bench man” for my high school baseketball team, and while the rest of us were on the court boxing out and laying in, he was the one jittering on the bench, waving his white towel with vigour and screaming his pre-pubescent voice hoarse. Mr. Lo, Asia-Pacific vice-president of Research in Motion, is doing exactly those things (hopefully not literally) for the BlackBerry in his homeland, hopefully giving the device a better name (again, hopefully not literally).
