Reader gets newer Pearl?

Comments

Ever wonder if people are actually listening? Apparently RIM is – and to our RIM readers, we thank you for your ears – and they’re doing something, again apparently, about the griping that followed the release of the Pearl.

Jason, a BBHub reader, notes that he returned a slightly defective Pearl the he purchased on the day they rolled-out (9/12) and received another. He was kind of enough to scrutinize both devices and made some interesting notes. Apparently RIM’s hard at work repairing those little glitches we’ve come to know and love. Check out the findings.

a) The backlighting in the trackball and under the keys has a more noticeable — and brighter — feel. Instead of being stark white, the backlight now has a slight purplish hue to it.
b) The keys are NOT as “squishy” as they are on my original 8100. c) They feel tighter, and the tactile feedback seems much more firm. I recall previous Engadget posts about the keys merely being ‘glued’ on. It seems they still are, but perhaps stronger glue or a different method.
d) The speakerphone is considerably louder.
e) And, because of #3, ringtones and other things are significantly louder, often distorting as they used to on my 8700g
f) Despite the software being the same revision, I haven’t yet experienced the “uncaught exception” when coming out of standby.
g) The MicroSD Card door has a more pronounced “Open” engraving.
h) The FCC ID on the OLD 8100 has L86 printed next to it. The NEW 8100 has 896.
i) Of minor note, the LED flash housing on the OLD 8100 is somewhat opaque. On the NEW 8100, it’s very much clear.

A commenter on the post is kind enough to note that the FCC ID’s mean that one was made in August (L86) and September (896), respectively. Are these issues slowly being cleared up, or is it all wishful thinking? What do you think about the evidence? Would this make a really crummy CSI episode?
