Q: Does the new BB pearl have an auto key lock function? Or do I have to rely on the *key to lock?
A: If you go under the Options > Security > General Settings, you can set the security timeout if you enable a password which will lock the device automatically for you but you will have to enter a password to unlock it. On that screen you can also set the handheld to lock when you put it in a holster. But an auto-lock in general does not seem to be available.

Q: I recently purchased a Blackberry 8100 (Pearl). I have an issue I’m hoping you can help me with as no one seems to be able to shed light on this. Do I have to manually disconnect my Bluetooth headset every time I’m done with a call to save battery power?
A: When you hang up a call, the Bluetooth headset will maintain a connection with the BlackBerry but in very low-power mode. You will notice a difference in battery life with any Bluetooth device connected to the BlackBerry vs. having no Bluetooth connection but this is the case with all phones. RIM takes battery life very seriously and does everything possible to reduce the battery drain when you have a headset connected and it’s not in use.

Q: Any word on a 3G upgrade for Cingular users on the 8700c. Is the difference from edge to 3G worth it?
A: EDGE gives very acceptable data rates for applications on the BlackBerry. 3G might speed up your connection if you are use the tethered modem function of the BB but I doubt it will make a major impact on your general BB usage. Processing the HTML and style sheets on web pages takes up as much time as actually downloading them on my Pearl so a 3G upgrade there would do not much better.

Q: How can I send or receives files via Bluetooth?
A: There are only a couple of profiles available on the BlackBerry via Bluetooth and file transfer is not possible without a custom application that facilitates this.
