[...] RIM keeps the ball rolling with another release. This time, Alltel, known as “America’s largest network”, is releasing the BlackBerry 8703e. This one’s missing the antenna, so that’s good news. You’re looking at shelling out $249 USD after a $50 mail-in rebate for one of these bad boys - the perfect stocking stuffer. Check out the official release here. “The BlackBerry 8703e running on the Alltel Network is a high-performance productivity tool that delivers the functionality and flexibility that mobile professionals want while away from their desk,” said Mark Guibert, vice president, corporate marketing, Research In Motion. “We are very pleased to be working together to offer this powerful handset to Alltel customers.” [...]

To be clear: The built-in GPS receiver does not need an external antenna. E.g. the 7520 and 7100i only have external antennas because they are IDEN phones. As iden is working on a lower frequency using less power (compared to cdma and gsm) the handset needs an external antenna to provide high quality calls. You can see this on all Motorola iden phones (i615, i860, i870, i880, etc.) too.

I am guessing it is a photoshop prank. It is obviously a Treo 700p antenna stuck on there. I am in the process of trying to give up my Treo for the 8703e and I think it is going to stick....
