Fujitsu heads back to North America

It’s apparent that there’s a minor wireless boom going on right now with various companies clambering to get a better spot in the market. Fujitsu is one of them, according to reports from Computing in the UK. If you can remember 12 years ago, Fujitsu existed selling analog handsets to the same market, only to bow out when the company felt that the U.S. market was “highly competitive and that margins on cell phones were too low”. Well, now they’re back, and ready to be a major U.S. player in the race to build high speed wireless broadband WiMax networks.

“To break into this business in the U.S., Fujitsu has become a leader in the movement to build an ecosystem around WiMax. The company, which is a founding member of the WiMax Forum, a standards-based organization that includes companies such as Motorola, Sprint and Alvarion, is working closely with Intel and is also introducing a new line of WiMax products. In a few years, Fujitsu could be a very big name in this new emerging wireless field.

Last month, Fujitsu announced a whole new line of WiMax products covering every major component in the WiMAX network, including silicon solutions, electronic devices, radio access network solutions, professional services and backhaul infrastructure solutions. The company presented two new high performance base stations designed for indoor or outdoor use.”

What does this mean for BlackBerry users? Well, with WiMax already part of their initiative, they’ve got a step up on all of the competition already who’re straggling behind. I’ve said it before, I’m sure, but 2007 will probably be one of the biggest years for wireless we’ve ever seen.
