Q: I want to buy a PDA type device for personal use/fun. I’m thinking Blackberry. However, it is an extra $44.00 on my monthly Cingular bill for a wireless data plan. So I started looking at PDA only – Palm TX for example. There I saw that any wi-fi capable PDA would connect to internet etc. at a wi-fi location (presumably without any special plan).
I don’t need to automatically get email, but would like to connect to the web occasionally. So, can the Blackberry do the same thing WITHOUT the extra special Cingular plan? Just my regular calling plan?
A: RIM does not currently make a consumer friendly BlackBerry with built-in Wi-Fi so to get data on your BlackBerry you will have to subscribe to a data plan. There are rumours of Wi-Fi on the BlackBerry 8800 (http://www.blackberrycool.com/2006/12/05/002902/) so you may want to wait and see what comes of that and if that suits your needs if it’s released as rumoured.
Q: I am new to the Blackberry and am just looking at the different models. I was wondering…. could one use voip/skype on the Blackberry? Could you download Skype onto your Blackberry and use it to talk?
A: This is the only product I know of right now that can do this: http://www.webmessenger.com/products/mimskype.htm
