I don't know what this guy is talking about. I have a Pearl in my pocket right now that I bought on Amazon when the $25 deal appeared and I used to replace a Treo that I've been using on Cingular for just over a year. There was some confusion with them about Amazon selling a service plan that wasn't in their system yet but otherwise they had no problem letting me upgrade my phone via Amazon.

This type of policy has always bugged me. The indirect dealers are paid a higher commission for a new customer signup than for a renewal. Part of that commission goes into subsidizing the cost of the phone. The net result is that new customers get better deals than existing customers.

Verizon doesn't do this and their churn is half of Cingular's....I wonder why :-)
