Weekend Contest: BBCool’s suggestion box

newbbcoolcontest.jpg

It’s been a while since we’ve said it, but the team here at BlackBerry Cool would like to thank everyone for being with us for close to two years now. If you’ve noticed, we’ve slowly been making changes to make BBCool a bigger and better BlackBerry resource for all of you. We started with the addition of the BlackBerry Cool Store back in December, and with the new editorial staffers like Jibi from BlackBerryForums and L.M. Lloyd, as well as our new weekly newsletter (check the sidebar), we’re getting closer to where we’d like to be.

This week for the Weekend Contest we’re putting our lives into your hands and asking for your help.

This week we ask you: How would you improve BlackBerry Cool? What would you like to see? What are you seeing that you don’t want to see? Think long and hard, folks. I’ve alluded to big changes happening to the site before, and we’d like your input before we take our biggest step yet. Three winners (!) this week will walkaway with the great release from Ascendo - DataVault. If you’ve yet to see it, check out our review of DataVault to see what goodness you could be getting your hands on when you tell us how to do our jobs.

Last week we questioned the populous, asking what the iPhone’s effect would be on the BlackBerry and the entire wireless industry. The prize of a $20 iTunes gift certificate goes to JP who didn’t really fall into the hype like the rest of the Internet did.

“My armchair analysis of the “iPhone effect” is that for the short to medium term it will result in very little change for the wireless industry. This is based on my guess that for all of the buzz and glory of what by all means looks like a great toy, the masses will not part with the $499 up front and the $115+/mo (data+sms+voice) to use the device.”

Congrats, JP. And to those who always seem puzzled, the weekend contest runs from one Friday until the next, so you have until a new contest pops up to enter. So think about this - you have all week.

First off I must say I love your site. I subscribe to your blog through bloglines and constantly look forward to more Blackberry News.

I am a passive user in the sense that I constantly read your articles but do not usually make comments or suggestions. But, here goes.

1. Please keep the software reviews coming. I have been enjoying your in depth reviews of Ascendo software, MyUtils, SplashPhoto, Theme Packs, etc. I have been longing for this and have recently seen a vast improvement.

As an avid user, I am constantly playing with my blackberry, showing it off and trying to be more efficient in my day-to-day life.

Well done and keep it up. P.S. Every time you do a software review, you should try to give a few full versioned copies to users of your blog (and not just through weekend contests). I think this will keep people interested.

2. I also think your ThoughtPiece’s (ex. Why RIM and Verizon Need to Get Closer) are brilliant. Please keep them coming. I don’t mind short articles - in fact I like them because I usually read them when I have a few seconds of down time in the day.

But, being a subscriber to other Blackberry Enthusiast sites, you need to distinguish yourself from other sites and I think this is definitely one way to do it.

Reading these thought provoking pieces allow me to constantly challenge my view of the internet and communications, how it shaping and where the technologies will continue to lead.

3. I think you need to have more interviews with personalities around the internet whether they be via text, audio or even video.

P.S. I loved your interview(s) with Boy Genius!

4. You should continue to improve your Blackberycool.com Software Directory. I know many Blackberry users in my area (beginners and advanced) and they are constantly looking for new and better ways to use there blackberry. Think of yourselves as the one stop shop to Blackberry Software and be sure to incorporate your software reviews into your software section.

5. Your site needs a little facelift. It is starting to just look…well…average.

6. There needs to be more dialogue and collaboration from your users. All of your users have information and knowledge that needs to be shared.

I am not sure whether that would be through the comments sections, a chat section or some social network tagging feature but you must start to utilize the power of your users.

7. Keep up the good work. You guys are definitely cool and I appreciate all of your hard work, articles and reviews.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan has pretty much summed up everything but I wanted to add my 2 cents:

I think BBCool would be helped greatly by going to a full resource backend like ilounge.com, tomshardware.com, etc. The blog format worked when the site was smaller but BBCool has grown and it really should consider turning into a full resource website.

How about a top tips section where you publish diverse and creative tips for real world BB use? These could be organised into an archive which would make interesting reading for new and old BB users alike.

thanks,
Rog.
