Should Microsoft buy RIM?

I’ll chuck my vote into the “no” column for now. An article from makes the suggestion that Microsoft could and should purchase RIM to create an amazing device that’ll blow the iPhone (and other competitors) away. They present a compelling case, but there’s no swaying my vote just yet.

“After playing a secondary role to Apple (AAPL) in the iPod space, Microsoft could tackle Apple, Nokia (NOK), Motorola (MOT), Samsung and Palm (PALM) head on in the iPhone world.”

“If Microsoft were to buy Research In Motion (RIMM), it would give the former immediate access to the worldwide mobile communications market expanding its portfolio as a designer, manufacturer and marketer of wireless solutions – an area that is the core of RIM’s business model.”

Even though this article falls completely into the realm of fantasy, I can’t believe that placing RIM into the large, bumbling hands of Microsoft so that they can ruin it would be a good thing.

I believe I speak for everyone here when I say: Microsoft? F*** that s***! Pabst Blue Ribbon!
