I've had a few instances on planes over the US where I left the BB turned on and it's picked up a few emails.

The problem is that all that hunting for cell towers five miles below sucks the battery life. It's not really practical or reliable.

I had the total opposite situation last month. I flew to Tampa for vacation, I kept my phone on and had no signal from shortly after takeoff to until landing.
I checked it over and over, mostly because I was trying to send txt messages to my wife gloating that she was sitting in the snow at home while I enjoyed cocktails on my way to florida. . .hmmm, anyone know a good lawyer?

I was actually flying back from Europe in Feb and had forgotten to turn off my wireless when all of a sudden i got a telltale vibration on my phone. I htought it was a reminder but when I pulled it out of the holster I noticed it was a welcome SMS from a carrier that you get when you roam with Rogers.
I looked up at the map and we were flying close to the Faroe Islands 39,000 ft over the Atlantic. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&om=1&z=6&ll=61.940242,-6.981812&spn=8.441601,18.544922

I tried sending an SMS to my wife back home as a test, but couldn't get it sent off in time and I didn't dare try a call. Anyway, I turned off the wireless afterwards.

A lot of execs will still carry the old RIM 9xx devices that work on Mobitex because they get reception on their private jets.

Has something to do with the Mobitex working on a different spectrum.

Same thing works for mobile phones, but you're supposed to have the radio off on your Blackberry at all times when you're in flight.
