[...] Next up we have the announcement by RIM to release a kind of virtual BlackBerry OS experience for Windows Mobile. My thought is that it’s still going to be software running on top of Windows Mobile, and so will still be far less than a full BlackBerry experience. No matter how great the BlackBerry software is, it will still be limited by Windows Mobile. Imagine trying to run a Mac OS X emulator on top of Windows; it in no way would match the experience of the Apple OS on a true Mac. As an old saying goes, “you can put lipstick and a fancy dress on a pig – but she’s still a stinky pig.” [...]

crazylegs: interesting thought yourself.

Your suggestion would be a radical move for RIM, but the carriers have too much power now to allow for that. There is no way RIM will challenge the carriers and their oligopoly power.

Interesting thought - what if RIM cut the carrier out completely and just operated this for say $5 extra per month as a fee between the user and RIM. I mean one could easily download the application OTA, install it, activate it, give RIM your credit card number and they charge you each month. Cancel anytime.

Imagine the margin on that revenue once you have the infrastructure in place. (Front end web interface to manage user settings, back end tech)

Not sure about the technology requirements, but could be interesting. They would turn the carrier's network into a dumb pipe delivering their smart service. Hmmm...
