Getting it All Going

The great thing about Bluetooth technology is that everything is standard, so connecting it was a matter of turning Bluetooth on the device, searching and then pairing the Garmin puck, and then starting the XT software.

The first time you start the program you have to go through a few setup screens. The GPS service is not a one-time fee, but a yearly fee so you will need to have an activation code which works like your access key.

I have to mention that I did have an issue at this point because the Blackberry that I was using was not connected to a BES, so I didn’t have full TCP/IP, which threw a network connection error. I looked to see if there was setting where you can choose your carrier like most Blackberry programs but unfortunately Garmin seems to build specifically for the carrier. I got around this by just using a Blackberry connected to a BES.

    GPS is a provided by the government, and IS free. From reading your review, am I to believe that is is one more company attempting to charge for ‘free water’?

    GPS service is free but Garmin also offers a whole bunch of add-ons like the location of the nearest stores, gas stations, landmarks, etc. All of this stuff has to be updated.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!! I’m new to the Blackberry and Garmin world.

    How did you download Garmin Mobile XT to the Pearl? I have purchased the Mobile 10 deluxe from Garmin that comes with the DVD but I don’t know what to do next. Garmin is telling me I need to return it for the Blackberry version (microSD), but the people that sold me this is quite a distace and doesn’t sell that version.

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!

    For my part : Been using it a lot on my frequent travels and in other NY boroughs since when it came out, first with a 7100, then with the 8100. I love it, it’s simple, no unnecessary “toy” features. I still have a few full-fledged ones, too. Basically a waste, but who knew ? Must keep connected via lighter plug, though, otherwise the 8100 battery drains in a hurry. The puck holds a charge for the better part of a day without needing to be tethered but takes a charge quickly when allowed to take a turn at the charger.

    If you want to install MobileXT to a unit, you will need to install it on a memory card. After that insert the memory in the PocketPC or Blackberry. For the BLackBerry units I’m not sure, but normaly it should automaticaly ask if you want to install the MobileXT just after inserting the memory card.

    The best is to download the latest version of MobileXT on the Garmin website:
