Patent trolls take one in the teeth, world rejoices

JudgeAlthough RIM’s patent troubles are (hopefully) behind them, a recent ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court will probably have them sleeping a little easier about future grudge matches.

According to Fortune, the U.S. Supreme Court has laid the smack down on patent holders and the USPTO, saying that patents had previously been handed out to easily, and that federal judges would now have the power to strike down patents deemed “obvious”.

While opponents to the ruling state that it will make it “harder, more costly, and more time consuming for inventors to obtain U.S. patents in all areas of technology, particularly mechanical inventions and software and methods of doing business,” Fortune and BBCool agree that it more likely means that patent trolls will now have shakier ground to stand on, and true innovators will be the only ones allowed patents. Good job guys!
