Big news, guys. We all know Skype. $30 a year for unlimited calling? It’s coming to BlackBerry, and boy are the carriers going to be pissed. Is it just me or is RIM biting the hand that feeds them?

“and boy are the carriers going to be pissed.”
Not necessarily. Skype will just rip through your data plan, and it’s data services that carriers are counting on to increase profit.
Not if you have ‘unlimited’ data which should be most Americans but once again Canadians get screwed.
Hey what’s up with messages being posted under ‘Blackberry Cool’ by default.
Which is where some sort of mobile net-neutrality may come in to play. Carriers shaping their mobile network to slowdown voip apps.
Testing to see if my name shows up.
Sorry guys - looks like WordPress has gone crazy. We will try to get it resolved soon. In the meantime, just leave your name (if you want) at the bottom of your post.

Can you even get data plans w/out voice? I didn’t see that as an option when I got my BB from Cingular. Perhaps I missed something but it seemed you had to get a voice plan along with data. If that’s true then while it is nice to have my Skype list on the BB, it doesn’t make it any cheaper to use my phone. Useful yes, but only cheaper if I can dump my voice plan. Then I can save about ~30+ taxes (difference between Skype unlimited and 900 mins isn’t that big).
Why can’t Canadians get an unlimited data plan. and the blackberry is a canadian product. the party line about population density is a big fat lie - most of the blackberries are within very concentrated urban areas as dense as any in the world. it’s a way of these companies to milk us. it’s all about regulation and lack of competition.Shame on Rogers! They have to know we know how shameful and greedy they are being.
Problem is, it doesn’t go out over voip…. It makes calls to your phone via regular PSTN just with no PC client anymore….
Also It requires skypeout credit for PSTN calls EVEN if you have unlimited Skype out….
Kinda a rip off….
Skype already works with windows mobile devices so it is something that RIM had to do eventually. (http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/)
This will be great with a BB that has 802.11.
This app is not as exciting as it seems. Its a call back scheme and therefore you are required to have a voiceplan as it will use your voice minutes.
The advantages are that you can use it to make international calls w/o paying international calling rates.
It would be nice if their was a BB app that allowed you to route your calls over the data network and thus avoid using your voice plan
iSkoot released a Skype for Blackberry solution, that supports better voice quality than others. Their solution uses the phone voice architecture for better sound quality, and low data bandwidth for Chat/Multi-chat and presence.
