Wi-Fi BlackBerry by end of year

rim_logo_blue.jpgThe hints of Wi-Fi adoption for call hand-off just before WES have been confirmed by RIM Senior VP David Yach, in speaking with eWeek.

“I think Wi-Fi is interesting because it offers a number of capabilities, and because it offers coverage where there is none,” Yach said. “You’re not as concerned about usage fees. Our goal with Wi-Fi then is that Wi-Fi will just work. When you have coverage Wi-Fi will work, and when you don’t you’ll use something else,” he said.

The biggest issue, apparently, has been working with carriers to make sure the service is reliable. Although other phones have been packing Wi-Fi for awhile now, RIM wants to get things juuuusssst right.
