[...] The aforementioned JP Morgan conference which Jim Balsillie is attending has started, and his keynote revolved around the coming of Wi-Fi. It’s no big surprise - RIM’s been talking about it for awhile now. The only bit that’s especially new is that we can expected a converged Wi-Fi BlackBerry by the “back end of this year”. Jim goes over some of his reasons for not hopping on the Wi-Fi bandwagon earlier, primarily because he considered it overhyped. But since any unsubstantiated hype has had a chance to die down, and still nobody can shut up about it, the timing to get Wi-Fi out there is just about right. You can get Balsillie’s full webcast over here. [...]

[...] Last week at WES, Jim Balsille personally told me to expect two or three surprises from RIM by the end of the year. With our breaking rumor from the showfloor, and added confirmation from the Boy Genius, it seems clear that the first “surprise” will be a new Pearl/SureType device out sometime this fall (September-October). Given the recent words of RIM Senior VP David Yach in conjunction with the Pearl rumors, we can also safely say that Wi-Fi is RIM’s second surprise for the rest of 2007. [...]

[...] Now, my math ain’t great, but I figure 3G x 10 = 30G = awesome. Throw in the fact CDMA2000 is lining up to be the new global standard for 3G technology, what with 251 operators across 105 countries using it, the next gen’s going to have unprecedented support and compatibility. But it’s still going to be a lot of traffic that carriers will have to deal with. If Wi-Fi can time their incoming upgrade to the new 802.11n standard and work well with cellular hand-off, then performance pressure could be relieved, thus increasing service reliability.
[...] Boy Genius has been doing his wireless industry superspy thing again. He’s talking about some 8120s coming out by September, with not only new colours, but with camera, Wi-Fi and GPS. Yup, all three. Considering some recent news, one could say that WiFi is definitely coming into town in a big way. [...]
