Touch screens are not as accurate as we would like to think. The iPhone will have many unhappy customers who fail to understand how to learn to use a touch screen. This is by no means a strike against Apple technology. It just a failure of tech people to realize that just because touch screens look cool does not make them useful. Especially when they are very small. Some forums already have people who are saying the touch screen is hard to get use too. It will not get any better!. People need feedback when they type. Our touch sensors in our own bodies want some feedback. That's why we can type better on a Blackberry than on a iPhone. If the iPhones touch pad was so easy to use it would not require software to correct mistakes from typing. At the most touchscreens in small form factors such as the iPhone will not become the standard in the cell phone industry. Just look at the Tablet Laptop, it too has not been widely accepted. Some of this has been due to flaws in software but mostly people just want to push a button. It creates action, which we see as completing the task. Not the same as pressing your finger to glass.

[...] Even though this is such a critical part of the mobile experience, manufacturers are drifting away from touchscreens, perhaps in the hope of introducing untapped input innovations, like the trackball. While 28% of Europeans chose to stick with the numeric keypad on their mobile, 23% were willing to make the switch so long as screen size remained large, and 24% put device size as their top priority. One of the more interesting numbers to come out of the report was the 50% of those surveyed who were already using extracurricular functions on their mobile (TV, music, e-mail, GPS) that were agreeable to using a touch-screen.
[...] Once you step out from the Apple glow, however, things aren’t necessarily quite that rosy. Touch screen devices of all types, not just from Apple, have several short comings, many of which are addressed in this top 10 list from The Red Ferret Journal. The issues addressed are not just anti-Apple rants, but a sign that touch technology is not quite ready at this time. Major phone vendors from Nokia to Palm to RIM (BlackBerry) have said that they have no serious plans for touch screen devices anytime soon. Even Microsoft, which scored quite a bit of publicity with the Surface Computer launch that also used multi-touch technology, hasn’t implemented any such capabilities into the Windows Mobile OS used by many smart phones. The closest is the HTC Touch (formerly Elf), which isn’t multi-touch but a swipe based interface that lets you “swipe” your finger across the screen to navigate through the menus. It’s nice, but also obviously just a layer on top of Windows Mobile, not a core feature, and definately not the main interface of choice for Windows Mobile devices. [...]
