1.3 billion 3G handsets by 2010

Comments

Graph UpIDATE is forecasting that 1.3 billion 3G handsets will be out in the wild by 2010, which wouldn’t be surprising if 3G usage is supposed to increase 10 times by 2011. Most of the data from the report is from 2005-2006, so who knows how the numbers that have come out since then would change the forecast. Despite the age, a lot of the trends are still running, like how 50% of the growth rate in CDMA technology is happening in Asia and the Pacific. BlackBerrys are going to be packing the 3G goodness soon enough, with Australia apparently leading the way.

Just a question to clarify on that last wee bit, does UMTS not count as 3G then? I thought that the BlackBerry 8707, which supports UMTS (and available in a few Asia markets), would imply that RIM already supports one type of 3G, or I am missing something here? In my mind, HSPDA is 3.5G?
