No, generally companies are willing to cut you a little slack for using your business computer for personal business on company time, knowing that they cut into your personal time with occasional after-hours phone calls and e-mails. It nets out close enough.

If there are any companies that are stupid enough to dock your pay for doing a little personal business on company time, those are the companies that should pay extra for asking for a little company business to be done on personal time.

Isn't identifying business from personal use of company property something that a company would do anyway, regardless of an overtime policy?

While this might seem like a good idea on the surface, it can lead to bigger problems. For the minute we start measuring our afterhours e-mailing, our employers will also start monitoring our personal e-mails during the day a little closer and charge us for all of the 'breaks' and personal business we do with our blackberries.

While it is nice to get an extra $40 or 50 bucks a day from your after-hours e-mails, it will hurt even more to lose $10 in pay for every grocery list e-mail from your spouse.
