Bacon on BlackBerry: Themes, Skype, and ringtones

Comments

Q: Where can I find themes for by BlackBerry?

Jeff BaconA: This is a common question I get (or something similar). Bplay.com has over 30 themes for the BlackBerry including the iBerry theme. Bplay.com supports the 7130, 8100, 8700, 8800, 8300 on a lot of their themes. They are even featuring themes by Keith Ardest (Wee theme is his first one there). If you have any requests for theme styles, I know support@bplay.com is always interested in hearing about them and they will pass them on to the product management team there.

Q: How do I change my ringtone? What type of music can I have for a ringtone?

Jeff BaconA: This is also a common question. The ringtone is set via the profiles configuration. On most BlackBerry themes there is a profiles icon in the top-right of the main screen. If you select this is will being up a profiles list including an Advanced option. Under advanced you can customize each profile, create new profiles and set custom ringtones for certain contacts.
The list of ringtones is generated from the music files that are on your device. Below is a chart showing which sound formats are supported on different BlackBerries. You can purchase BlackBerry ringtones (MIDI), BlackBerry realtones (MP3) and BlackBerry sound effects from bplay.com (click the ‘music’ tab at the top for more).

If you’re wondering why the 7200, 7500 and 7700 series are not listed it’s because while they technically support MIDI files, they sound like crap.
(Another method for setting a specific MP3 as the ringtone for the current profile is described here)
