Amen Elaine!

I too worked in the industry and yes I am a good tipper as we patron's are reffered to. But you server's need to keep in mind that you earn that tip. You do not get 20 - 25% if you suck and I sit waiting on you half the damn night because you want to stand in the corner and bull $hit with your friends and fellow servers. If you ven think about tampering with someones food you are a sick fu(k and will never be anything better. Here is the problem in the US now. The past couple of generations think they are owed something for doing nothing. Sad times in my opinion.

If you apply for a job that pays $2.15 an hour you cannot blame the world for a choice you made. The restaurant industry has made a fool out of it's patrons. You go out to eat, you pay them for a meal, you cannot go to the kitchen to get it yourself, so you are forced to pay the server to bring it to you. If the service is not good, they still expect to receive compensation. Oh by the way I have been a server for years. When the economy took a turn for the worse I opted out for a more stable income. Tipping percentages have increased dramatically over the years... Why doesn't the restaurant industry increase the base pay for a server instead of placing this responsibility on their customers?

In Europe I think those in the biz get more than we do in the states hourly. Just a heads up to a few of you who don't believe in tips. In Florida the Hourly rate a server gets is $2.15 an hour at most places. As a server you have to tip out your bartender a % of our Beverage sales, Food runners % of your food sales and a % to the bus boy to clean your tables... A server waits on you and basically is a mini slave so u can relax. Not for $2 tip. lets just say you take 1 hour to eat, a server just got paid $4.15/hour Minus all the tip outs mentioned above it basically costs the server money to wait on u. Tips Mean "To Insure Prompt Service" Who do u think is gonna get that prompt service? I mean wouldn't you like to have your drinks filled when u want them to or your food to come when you are hungry? Leave me a 2$ Tip I ill remeber you. Leave me 20% I will remember you. Think about it this way.. Would you rather be rembembered by the guy/gal who brings you something your gonna put in your mouth, as the 2$ guy or the 20% guy? I mean a lot of things can happen from the time the server gets your food/drink and the time it actually gets to your table. Keep that in mind next time you get the Screw the wait staff attitude. It doesn't always happen but it can, roll the dice as much as you like someday you will crap out.

I like using this because it breaks it out nicely and lets me to do the tip off of the total....not the total after taxes! I'm not a cheap a$$ but if your liquor and local taxes are driving up the price another 15% you shouldn't be tipping off of taxed amount! I've seen some debit machines these days where it now gives you a dollar choice or percentage choice and of course the percentage is based off the total after taxes!!

i am a server and if i dont get 20 percent i take it personal even if i gave great Service. servers in the us make 2.15 an hour so we work on tips alone, we dont even get all of our tips we have to tip out bartenders, hosts, etc. In some countries though they actually get a paycheck and make enough hourly so your don't need to tip. Anything under a 20 percent tip shpuld deserve an exaination!!! I think everyone should be a server for a year out of their lives....the world be a lot different!

You all sound like a bunch of cheap bastards. I always leave a decent tip regardless of service. Its common courtesy which no one has in this day in age. That is why I will never be a waitor nor work at a restaurant.

I agree with David for the most part. To give NOTHING even if the service is bad is being cheap. Here in NJ, my wife and I always tip $1 per drink at a bar, and ALWAYS at least 15% in a restaurant (but usually 20%) when the service is good which it usually is. I mean, even if the service was terrible we still give a tip...but not 15%...usually 10%.

Well all i have to say, i am a bartender and a waiter, and in the US this is what the average tip should be, 15% if bad, 20% if good, 25% or more if great , thats for food and drinks at a table, if you are just ordering drinks from the bar you tip $1 a drink or beer unless its a speciality drink and takes a little longer to make, you tip $2 a drink. that is good tipping standards from someone who works in the profession.

Oh my god. Ask anyone (in the world) and they'll tell you I'm the worst at math. This little thing is gonna come in handy for a fat-ass like myself =)

I would also like to add that 10% is average and pretty damn decent here in Canada. Unless you're at a 'nicer' place that charges an entree for $20-25 then the 15-20% range is more acceptable.

I'm guessing that anyone who owns a Blackberry is smart enough to calculate 10% in their head without the assistance of a calculator.
But to each his own I guess.

In UK, 10% is a decent tip!

Unlike the states we tend not to have to tip so heavily or to tip at all if the Service was bad!

10% Tip? Must of been a really bad waitress.
15 to 20% is more along the lines of an acceptable tip.
