It might not be such a huge deal now that Google’s doing cell tower proximity detection too, but SameCell has come out of their beta program, and is now offering applications for Facebook and the iPhone. The BlackBerry application now lets GPS data complement SameCell’s function, and can give you alerts if anyone you know is within a mile of your location. Facebook can now associate status message updates with specific locations, and considering how many people I know use it to say “… is at home” or “… is at work”, it sounds like the perfect way of extending Facebook’s uses. You can also use Facebook Groups to share your location with a particular bunch of people. Good stuff all around!
