Word has it from the second-most populous country in the world that BlackBerry deployments are coming under close scrutiny from federal officials, and carriers may have their services stopped if things don’t go well. It all started with one carrier, Tata Teleservices, was denied certification by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs because BlackBerry’s don’t allow “lawful interception”. As result, the MHA will be reviewing all Indian carriers supporting BlackBerry.
Obviously RIM has every interest in keeping their product in such a booming area: “RIM supports its carrier partners in India and we will work together with them to seek further clarity,” a RIM spokesperson said. Combined with rumors of setting up manufacturing and software development facilities in the neighbourhood, a state-imposed BlackBerry recall could really hurt Asian development. Russia recently approved BlackBerry services despite similar concerns, and so did China after a lengthy examination, but in the end they both made it through. It seems downright unfair that the government would renege on prior approval, but stranger things have happened…
