I just purchased the 8330 and upgraded the Memory Card to 4GB. Now it seems the system keeps stalling or gets stuck when I try to access photos or music from the memory card…works fine and then the next time I try to do the same process it will freeze and even logs me out of the messaging service. What’s the deal???
Is this due to the lack of internal memory running everything?? I even had my account services suspended once…this is very frustrating.
I’ve not read anywhere what the upgrade limit is on the memory card…can I not upgrade to 4GB maybe?

These devices from Blackberry are horribly underpowered. The 8830 and the Pearl both suffer from memory leaks and require 10 MB of free ram (of your 47 MB available) or else your phone will start automatically deleting your phone logs and emails! You also cannot launch apps off the SD Card so you need these apps to reside in local memory. Blackberry is trying to skimp as much as possible on costs which is why you’re getting an inadequately equipped phone, the same way you did for years with Palm’s Treo. We’ve seen what happened to Palm as a manufacturer as they faded away very quickly after being ubiquitous.

Yes, it’s silly that in this day and age of dirt cheap memory that a Blackberry device can’t have MUCH more. Heck, even doubling it to 128M would be an awesome upgrade.

Of course, if an OS upgrade from RIM would allow applications to run from microSD card, that would be the ultimate solution. ESPECIALLY if non-persistent stuff like graphics and browser cache and such could be directed to SD.

Good efficiency and battery life are good things but when you install few apps, BB memory runs out and messages are gone! So, to be on a safe side, a user has to have just few apps installed. On a BB GPS, Messaging, and Mobile functionalities are essential. In that respect, lack of BB memory doesn’t allow BB to be more functional.

Yahoo Go is good. It can sync your address to Yahoo address book and have other nice features.
Live, if your BB can do GSP, you can turn the map on and becomes a live map with traffic report. and the map can “follow” you.
and Google, I don’t have to tell you about all the google stuff but… if you leave Google map on or forget to “close” it.. it uses all the memory.. and boom… messages get deleted.

and there are other apps that uses memory like viigo or whatever. Installing 3rd party apps and theme can be discouraging.

I wish BB had 128MB or 256MB. I mean this is 2008.

I have VZW 8830.

I have uninstalled Microsoft Live, Yahoo Go!, and few Google apps. I don’t have viigo, handmark, or other apps because I will run out of memory very fast.

Memory is really cheap. I am wondering why RIM can’t put more memory into their devices. Maybe there is some technical issues like.. 32 bit OS only recognizing 3.5GB or so?
