I work in a big telecom company in Canada. My work paid BB is connected to my work email.I actualy refuse to use it after work hours unless it is my own choice. During the day,I have removed the rings/vibration on incoming email from all profiles. I used it the most before meetings (everybody is late 5-10 minutes) and during the meetings. So, with 1 hour of meeting my emails are done for the day. Don't envy me, I takes me 1 hour of emails per day using the GTD system having around 25 rules that clean up all the junk from my Inbox. I also function on the principle that if an email is *that* important and by an honest mistake I erased it, the person that sent it to me will follow up on it. **** Actualy I activated an extended leave message saying that any email will be answered in 72 hours as I am in coaching with my team. So if it is *that* important, I left my cell no in the message and people can call me :). They need me - they have to run after me. A bit selfish, but life is life ......

I once got cussed out by my boss for not being on an email thread with some senior management that started at 11pm and went on until 3am. My boss was shocked and annoyed that I actually have my blackberry turn off after 10pm.

I own my own BB, and pay the bill...so I choose to be connected. I do think though that corporate America is way out of control with this 24/7 expectation of staying connected. To the guy and his team (spoken like a true boss) that check their BBs until midnight every night - ya'll need therapy. No one is that important unless you are all surgeons. People like that remind me of the insane and RUDE people that take calls in churches, restaurants and at 10,000 feet in the air. You are not *that* important.

I actually went and hooked my own BB into my work email because I found I was sitting at home answering emails at night on the PC. Might as well do it on the train instead. So yeah I'm weird but I find this results in me taking less work home strangely enough.

If folks in our company didn't check their BB's at midnight, we'd be behind the curve all the time. It is almost required for everyone to be connected until at least midnight. We get emails all the time and at all hours of the day. But, too bad we are all salaried! No OT here!
