How to upgrade your BlackBerry OS

UPDATE: PLEASE SEE THE UPDATED VERSION OF THIS POST AS IT INCLUDES NEWER SOFTWARE AND UPDATED TIPS.

We thought it would be prudent to go through the process of upgrading your handheld software, what with OS 4.5 and 4.6 having hit us in pretty quick succession over the last month or two. New operating systems usually have plenty of new bells and whistles that are worth getting in on, so if you haven’t yet, we’ve got instruction here on how to make the switch. The BlackBerry OS upgrade can be a daunting process if you’ve never done it before, but don’t fear – Big Papa BBCool is here to hold your hand through the whole thing.

What you’ll need…

  • Desktop Manager (free 200-300 MB download)
  • Handheld software (free 60-80 MB download)
  • Time (about two hours, counting download, device backup, and installation)

Steps

  1. Download Desktop Manager
  2. Download handheld software
  3. Install handheld software

Difficulty: Mild salsa. It’s a little worrying that the backup doesn’t go through or your device doesn’t like the new OS, but the biggest pain is finding where to download the right software, which we’ll help you out with.

And further to that, for two days I am trying to update the OS on BB. I have phone from Mobilink Pakistan, the most worn out service in the world, and BB do not even mention this company in their downloads link.
I downloaded from internet the desktop manager, but roxio gives runtime errors.
I can keep on making a long list.
Overall I am sick and tires of BB.

Installed 4.5 on BB 8310 Curve with enterprise activation. Wireless provider doesn’t support this OS. Before installation I hade twice to delete vendor.xml. After instalation all settings were restored except enterprise activation. After request for recreating account on BES and new activation everything is fine!

I am trying to upgrade my BBpearl 8100 on T-Mobile to BB OS 4.5. T-mobile STILL hasn’t released anything past 4.2. I am using Desktop Manager 4.7 and I have downloaded the 4.5 OS from TIM Italy via the link on this website. However my apploader still will not pick up the update. I am very excited to upgrade and If anyone can help that would be very appreciated. I really could use the docs to go program. BTW I am only using OS4.2 right now.

I just upgraded my Rogers Curve 8310 to the 4.5 OS.
Now every time I try to make a phone call the phone gets hung up, disconnects me and I get a white screen with an hourglass. It then jumps back to the main screen and says “Setting up Security”. It also is searching for a network connection. This happens consistently every time I try to make a call, which is very annoying.

    Please help!!!

    Thanks,
    Steve

Just upgraded my Sprint BB Curve 8330 to 4.5. Now I’ve lost email reconciliation menu under options. After going over everything with Sprint and reloading 4.5 with their tech on the line, still no luck.

Then they say that this has been a problem with some devices when upgrading to 4.5. Loss of email reconciliation. Had to change my setting online to delete on server as well. Damn, sure liked the ability to set reconciliation settings for each email account and whether to delete on handheld, server or both.

Any ideas? I’d hate to go back to 4.3 with Sprint as no Docs to Go support for that or enhanced Web and email support.

Any other Sprint users out there with the same problem? Or this problem in general when upgrading? How do you fix it?

Personally, after reading the upgrade directions along with everyone’s post, it seems too risky of an undertaking. I’ve been on the fence about upgrading from 4.2.2170 because of the hassle. YES it is a daunting task, and NO I’m not lazy! My impression is that iPhone makes the user experience much more pleasant.

I found that when I upgraded, patience was the key. Alot of places during the install it seemed that all was stalled. I forced myself to do more google searches while it was appearing to ‘hang’. Many links warned to just hang tight and let it finish – it seemed to take an eternity, but it finally moved forward and finished.

There were some technical glitches, but I was able to work through them, finally. It helps being in the software dev industry, but google and these forums are your friend… use them. and keep the patience.

I agree, it could be made simpler – but there is a lot going on, and it makes for a complex install, which doesn’t always equate to user-friendly.

And before you throw the iPhone gig at me – my employees (developers) who have iPhones have their share of issues too, it just seems the iPhone guys don’t like to complain as loudly – I joke my guys here that its maybe because they have an image to keep (that the iPhone is superior! hehehe). Don’t slam me… I’m just making fun here.

I’ve attempted to use themes on the Curve from Sprint now twice. They load and are visible on the applications menu, but are not available on the theme menu. I’ve installed v4.5 2x and done the hard resent more times than I can count. Any suggestions?

I tried to upgrade my sprint curve 8330 and at the very end I got a ‘fatal’ error message. Would it be best to put the device back to factory state and then update and then restore? Thanks

Used this guide to upgrade my Sprint 8830 from 4.2 to 4.5

All I cna say, is thank you for taking the time to post this, worked great. Like Mikeeb said…parts of the process did take FOREVER adn a couple times I though the install had locked up. But I just left it alone and check back every now and then. Eventually everything completed and all is great now. Thanks again!

I don’t know if this makes a difference, but I downloaded the handset software from the sprint site, and i got the desktop manager directly from the RIM site. So I didn’t have to deal with deleting the vendor.xml file at all.

If you have a Curve 8310, DON’T upgrade to 4.5. If you do, remove SD card if installed. If you’re lucky, after the upgrade the volume from the ear speaker will be audible when you make/receive calls. If not, then at least you’ll have GPS. You might be able to re-insert your microSD card without the phone crashing, and if you can, reformat it in the phone, which might help. Otherwise, petition RIM to release a stable, bug-free OS for their SmartPhones that doesn’t give with one hand and take away with the other.

Well hmm, I have a blackberry curve 8310 – it upgraded fine. None of my hands are having fits.

As I mentioned in a previous post, it just takes patience… they should give better status to let you know it IS working while you’re sitting there fretting over the install – but if you sit on your hands, or just go fishing, while its working, it turns out just fine. I’ve upgraded 3 friends’ phones as well – all three went fine.

I have seen a few people ask but no reply:: If you have an Unlocked At&T Curve 8310 that you now use on T-Mobile, what OS should I use? It seems like a simple question but I don’t know the first thing about tech and I don’t want to end up like some on this thread. So shold I upgrade to the latest OS thru At&T even though I use it on t-mobile, or od I get T-mobile’s newest os? Also, what about the Desktop Manager? Are they carrier specific or can I download any Desktop manager? Any and all help is very much appreciated.

if you have a unlocked phone, and you upgrade it, it will lock the phone. I have unlocked psp and when i tried to get new software to it, it locked, so i had to unlock again! (PSP OS: windows vista)

i’ve got a bb curve 8320 and have waited patiently for rim/pocketmac to come out with a system by which mac users can upgrade their device software.

i’m tired of waiting and i don’t feel like asking pc friends for four hours of their computers’ time to upgrade.

will rim ever develop an upgrade process for mac users? is there a workaround that anyone is familiar with?
