How to upgrade your BlackBerry OS

UPDATE: PLEASE SEE THE UPDATED VERSION OF THIS POST AS IT INCLUDES NEWER SOFTWARE AND UPDATED TIPS.

We thought it would be prudent to go through the process of upgrading your handheld software, what with OS 4.5 and 4.6 having hit us in pretty quick succession over the last month or two. New operating systems usually have plenty of new bells and whistles that are worth getting in on, so if you haven’t yet, we’ve got instruction here on how to make the switch. The BlackBerry OS upgrade can be a daunting process if you’ve never done it before, but don’t fear – Big Papa BBCool is here to hold your hand through the whole thing.

What you’ll need…

  • Desktop Manager (free 200-300 MB download)
  • Handheld software (free 60-80 MB download)
  • Time (about two hours, counting download, device backup, and installation)

Steps

  1. Download Desktop Manager
  2. Download handheld software
  3. Install handheld software

Difficulty: Mild salsa. It’s a little worrying that the backup doesn’t go through or your device doesn’t like the new OS, but the biggest pain is finding where to download the right software, which we’ll help you out with.

    i’ve got a bb curve 8320 and have waited patiently for rim/pocketmac to come out with a system by which mac users can upgrade their device software.

    i’m tired of waiting and i don’t feel like asking pc friends for four hours of their computers’ time to upgrade.

    will rim ever develop an upgrade process for mac users? is there a workaround that anyone is familiar with?

    Hi, I Have had OS 4.5 installed on my BB 8310 Curve whih is great, but however have lost BB Messenger & Password Keeper, I have tried to downloadload the BB Messnenger on the handset as directed by the BB web-site but it tells me i have the incorrect software i.e not 4.1 or 4.2. Any ideas? Thanks.

    During the update process my blackberry curve 8310 got disconnected and now it is an unrecognized device by windows and the blackberry desktop manger doesn’t recognize that it is connected, the phone also will not boot up, the led status light flashess twice when i attempt to turn it on and then nothing, when pluged into charger or computer light flashes twice every 3 secs

    Just updated my T-mobile Pearl 8120 4.2 to the 4.5 with these instructions. I followed the instructions and had absolutely NO problems. I was really nervous about doing it after hearing about all the problems some have had. Just wanted to say thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    so i think i just bricked my phone. its an 8320 from tmobile but i unlocked it for att. i tried doing the tmobile one but it got to the part right after it deleted all the applications and just stopped working, now it wont connect because there is nothing to connect to. i just have a blank screen with a box in the middle with three shapes and an X thru it. has the number 507 under it. what can i do to remedy this? the BB wont connect to DM cuz there is no software at all on the device? any thoughts?

So I unplugged it, took the battery out, and then took the 1Gb Micro SD card out. Put the battery back in and re-connected the PC cable to the phone. it booted up , asked some permission question and continued with task 11 – restoring data. Oh yeah, i also had to reset my wallpaper and font. Now everything is fine and working perfectly. Thanks.

    I got the spinning hourglass thing and I just clicked “cancel” on the PC. The phone booted up and the restore commenced. I guess we’ll see how it goes from here . . .

    I followed all the steps and everything went smoothly. But it’s saying there aren’t any updates available, which I know is a bunch of crap. And i’ve read that you guys have said to delete the “vendor.xml” file? How do I do that?

    I have version 5.0 desktop manager, downioaded the upgarde software 4.5 for the curve 8320 on rogers, and when i go to instal it says i have the lastest version already. i have the 4.2

    I have BB 8100 with 4.2 device software. Its a nightmare for me because it doesn’t have Russian language and I forced to write russian words by english characters.

    I followed all instructions but Desktop Manager had not detected new available device software. Of course I made an installation of the device software before. I tried also to find updates manually by browsing and going to application loader files. But after clicking OK Desktop Manager says that there are no files suitable for my phone.

    Can anybody help? Is it possible that problem caused device software that I downloaded from some asian wireless provider?

    This is me again it seems that I solve the problem. The point is that I removed vendor.xml after Desktop Manager installation and before installation of 4.5 Device software. As I figured out installation of 4.5 Device Software makes another copy of the same vendor.xml in the same location. So the lesson learnt is to delete vendor.xml AFTER you install new (desired) version of Device software. Anyway thanks a lot for detailed instructions!

It has seemingly hung up 1/2 way through that task, even using the “show details” function results in no progress on the meter. I’m going to leave it alone for another hour as I am afraid to render my phone useless.

    After reading through all of the posts I am wondering if the instructions should tell people to remove their media cards.

    Following up: my 8320 screen now reads “App Error 523″ and “Reset”. I unplugged the USB cable, removed the battery, removed the media card, plugged back in the USB cable. Phone boots, the meter for Task 10 moves a bit then the same “App Error 523″ comes back. I keep enetering “reset” every time it comes up and the meter for Task 10 makes progress each time.

    Other forums are suggesting that “App Error 523″ is related to MMS. Whatever it is, my phone appears to be screwed. Thanks for nothing.

    Bottom line: do not attempt this, the instructions as posted do not work.

    installed the new OS, it was all good for a couple of hours, then it started to reset it self time and time again.
